The following table shows the dates of embarkation and disembarkation for British regiments who were involved in the Second Anglo-Afghan War 1878-1880 and their journeys from the United Kingdom to India (including any service en-route, eg. in Africa). The primary source has been a range of British nineteenth-century newspapers (see sources at foot), so accuracy is only as correct as the reports, though they have been double-checked where possible.
The Suez Canal was opened in 1869, and until 1873 British troops were usually conveyed to India by disembarking at Alexandria and then taking the overland train to Suez where a second troopship would transport the regiment to India. From 1873 onwards the journey would normally be continuous from Portsmouth (England) or Queenstown (Ireland), traversing the canal, and then on to Bombay.
