L. Frank Baum's classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz saw its first stage musical version just two years after publication, in 1902, debuting on Broadway the following year. The most famous version of the story is undoubtedly the 1939 MGM interpretation, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy and introducing a whole host of songs beloved by film goers the world over. In 1974 a new stage adaptation had its debut - The Wiz, written by William F Brown and with music by Charlie Smalls, it had an all-black cast and won seven Tony Awards after moving to Broadway in 1975. Two years later a film was made, produced jointly by Motown and Universal, directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor, amonst others. It unfortunately did not enjoy the critical acclaim of the theatrical version.
