L. Frank Baum's classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz saw its first stage musical version just two years after publication, in 1902, debuting on Broadway the following year. The most famous version of the story is undoubtedly the 1939 MGM interpretation, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy and introducing a whole host of songs beloved by film goers the world over, and this in turn has been adapted for the stage in several versions. Some productions still take the book as their source (including the original silver slippers), but the lure of songs like Over the Rainbow and Follow the Yellow Brick Road, and the visual appeal of the ruby slippers will always attract an audience.
