"A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? But in our little village of Anatevka, you might say every one of us is a fiddler on the roof, trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune without breaking his neck." - Tevye, Fiddler on the Roof

Based on a 1905 series of short stories concerning Tevye the Dairyman, by Sholem Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof was brought to the stage by Jerry Bock (music), Sheldon Harnick (lyrics) and Joseph Stein (book), opening on Broadway in 1964 with Zero Mostel playing the star role of Tevye. It had its West End debut in 1967 with Topol in the role, who would also go on to play the character in the 1971 film adaptation, which won three Oscars. Topol would revive his stage performance in the West End in 1983 and 1994; he also played him on Broadway in 1990. It is a much-loved musical featuring audience favourite songs such as Tradition, Matchmaker Matchmaker, Sunrise Sunset, and If I Were a Rich Man.
