Comic Potential is Alan Ayckbourn's 52nd play, seeing its premier on 4 June 1998 at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough (it moved to London a year later at the Lyric and to the US in the following year at the Manhattan Theatre Club). Janie Dee, who played Jaycie Triplethree in both UK premiere runs, as well as in the US, won Best Actress at the Oliviers, the Evening Standard, and the Critics' Circle Awards for her role. In 2003 the play was adapted for Polish television.
