Based on T. S. Elliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (1939), Andrew Lloyd Webber began setting the poems to music in the late 70s. The musical was created with Cameron Mackintosh alongside director Trevor Nunn and choreographer Gillian Lynne, and it saw its West End debut in 1981, with Broadway following a year later. Original London cast members included Paul Nicholas, Brian Blessed, Bonnie Langford, Sarah Brightman, Elaine Paige and Wayne Sleep. It has been one of the most successful musicals in history, helping to revive the medium and giving birth to the era of the 'mega-musical'. Featuring memorable characters such as Macavity, Grizabella, Rum Tum Tugger, Old Deuteronomy and Munkustrap, it was made into a huge-budget film in 2019, but even the likes of Judi Dench, Taylor Swift, Ian McKellen and Idris Elba couldn't save it from box-office disaster. The stage musical, however, continues to draw in huge crowds wherever it plays.
