These are two individual plays that are often paired together. Bouncers, by John Godber (husband of Jane Thornton), was first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1977, though it was the mid-eighties when it really became successful. It concerns the four doormen of a Yorkshire disco in something of a parody of Saturday Night Fever. Shakers, by Jane Thornton (wife of John Godber), was first performed in 1984 and has been similarly successful - even spawing a musical version that was recorded by the BBC. This has four women as the main characters, waitresses in a cocktail bar. Both plays have just the four cast members, but they are called upon to play multiple characters bringing the nightlife ... to life!
