Kanku Sho (To Look at the Sky, minor version)
Original name: Kusanku Sho

This kata poses some interesting technical challanges to the practitioner, not least of which are two jumps - one recalling the twist into shuto uke from Empi, and another that introduces a flying mikazuki geri (incorporating ushiro geri) that can also be seen in the advanced kata Unsu.

History

Kusanku Sho was created by Yasutsune Itosu as a sibling kata to the older Kusanku (Kanku Dai in Shotokan). It is credited as having been preserved through the teachings of Asanobu (Choshin) Chibana, one of Itosu's senior students. See fuller article here. ~ GE
