Hangetsu (half moon)

The breathing techniques, stance and characteristic kicking and punching sequences of this kata provide a rare link between Shotokan and some of the Naha-te styles such as Goju Ryu. The half-moon stance evolved from sanchin-dachi and the characteristic arced step. Along with the final mikazuki geri, this is the inspiration behind Gichin Funakoshi's 1920s renaming.
History
This kata is the most widespread form practiced by most Okinawan karate schools, including those of both the Shuri and Naha styles - though it varies considerably, the characteristics remain. It has Chinese origins (from the White Crane style) and is said to have been introduced to Okinawa by Bushi Matsumura. It is recorded as far back as 1867 when it was demonstrated at the East Garden of Shuri Castle by Pechin Aragaki Tsuji. ~ GE| < Enpi | back to main kata page | Jitte > |
