Educated at Aberdeen University (MA and LLD). Ensign 109th Foot (Bombay Infantry) Jan 1867. Attached to 45th Bengal Infantry (Rattray's Sikhs) Oct 1868. Lieutenant May 1871, Staff Corps, attached to 30th Bengal Infantry. Studied at Thomson Engineering College 1874. Afghan War with 29th Bengal Infantry, involved with initial advance into Peiwar range 28th Nov 1878, severely wounded in loins/back, recovered and served in second campaign including expedition to Zawa Dec 1879, captain Jan 1881, served with Southern Afghanistan Field Force as Assistant Road Commissioner Quetta-Kandahar line preparation for evacuation. Hazara expedition 1888, Lieutenant-Colonel. Jan 1894 Lieutenant-Colonel of 29th Bengal Infantry. First and second Miranzai expeditions 1895 and relief of Chitral. Commanded Malakand relief column 1897-98, relief of Chakdara and Utman Khel, as Major-General, C.B. Commanded 3rd Infantry Brigade China expedition 1900-01, K.C.B. Chairman of the Aberdeen Territorial Association, member of the United Services Club. Grave at Glenbuchat Kirk.
