Afghan war, served for a short time in the first phase, taking command of the Gatling Gun unit in the Kurrum Valley, attached to Field Battery to Ali Khel and Shalifzan, service cut short by typhoid fever Jun 1879, recovered at Peiwar Kotal and invalided to England. Egypt 1882, Aide de Camp to Sir Garnet Wolseley, present at El Magfar, Tel-el-Mahuta, Kassassin and Tel-el-Kebir. 1883 Aide de Camp to father Sir John Miller Adye, Governor of Gibraltar. Sudan 1884-85, on staff of Lord Wolseley. 1889-93 Staff Captain RA Thames District, also wrote (secretly) as military correspondent for a London newspaper, and occasionally for 'The Nineteenth Century'. Major Oct 1893, command of an RA company to Gibraltar, then invalided home for a year (fever), rejoined company at Malta. 1898 Brigade Major Royal Artillery at Portsmouth. South Africa Oct 1899 - Aug 1902, aided raising of South African Light Horse and Assistant Adjutant-General for Colonial Forces, commanded action at Kheis Drift. 1903-06 command of Artillery at Mauritius, 1906 General Staff Officer Malta. 1907-11 GSOI in the Department of the Director of Military Operations at the War Office. Jun 1911 Major-General, retired on half-pay. 1912-15 appointed Major-General in charge of Administration, Eastern Command. 1915 appointed Inspector-General of Communications Salonika force, 1916 assistant to General Altham at Alexandria, then Nile command, then Deputy Adjutant-General Egyptian Expeditionary Force. Returned to England Mar 1918, POW Branch at War Office and repatriation of POWs on continent. Retired Jun 1919, took up employment in Ministry of Pensions until 1923.
