Enlisted Black Watch, served in Indian Mutiny (1857-59), Cawnpore, Seraighat, Kalee Nuddee Bridge, Khodagunge, Futtehghur, Shumshabad, Lucknow, Rohilkund Campaign 1858, Bareilly and Nepal Frontier 1859. Appointed Bandmaster 78th in 1875, embarked for India in 1879. Recommended for a commission in 1883. Also served as Bandmaster for the Queen's Edinburgh Rifles and as Senior State Trumpeter for Scotland (1888 for over 30 years). In WWI he was involved in recruitment. | ||
