A not-for-profit specialist

Having spent much of my career at not-for-profit organisations, I'm well aware of the unique rewards and challenges of working in the third sector (for charities, trade unions, membership associations, community groups, and so on).

I love working for organisations doing worthwhile projects that I can feel proud of and enthusiastic about; organisations with important aims, a strong reputation and a proud history; organisations where members and volunteers are valued above shareholders and advertisers.

I'll go out of my way to find the powerful stories and images that help people engage with your work, and to present them in a way that's eye-catching, accessible and gives the greatest possible 'bang for your buck'.

With over 15 years' experience working on publications and communications for the not-for-profit sector, I understand that:

  • your funding may be limited and come with lots of strings attached
  • your work may be of a politically charged or highly sensitive nature, with restrictions for ethical or political reasons
  • you may be trying to accommodate the (often conflicting!) needs and wishes of managers, trustees, committees and sometimes partner organisations too
  • a government announcement or decision from your board could turn a project on its head in an instant
  • your production timescales may be frighteningly fast or frustratingly slow, and the goalposts may shift as the project progresses
  • your publications projects may be guided by an editorial board or communications committee – and their opinions matter!
  • everything you produce needs to reflect the diversity of your membership and be accessible to a broad audience
  • you may need to translate work into Welsh or minority community languages
  • your meetings and events often take place outside of office hours to fit in with the busy lives of your members or volunteers.

I'm used to dealing with all of this, and none of it fazes me! If you think I might be able to help your charity, union or membership organisation with its publications or e-communications, get in touch to discuss your needs.
