Choosing Childcare by Elyssa Campbell-Barr

As the working mother of two young children, and with almost two decades of experiences in childcare and education publishing, I was delighted when Cross Publishing approached me to write a guide to help parents explore their childcare options.

Our initial plan was an online guide of around 10,000 words. But by the time we'd included everything we felt was essential – info about all the different types of childcare, as well as parental leave and flexible working rights, the financial support available and ideas for juggling work and family life, all backed up with lots of real-life stories from working parents – the material was five times longer than we'd anticipated!

Eighteen months on, our little guide is now a 200-page handbook – Choosing Childcare: Nurseries, Childminders, Nannies, Au Pairs, Family – with a supporting website: www.choosing-childcare.co.uk. We're proud to have produced the UK's most comprehensive, impartial and up-to-date guide to childcare, and delighted with initial feedback:

'Wonderful. How I wish this book had been available when my children were young.'
Jilly Cooper, bestselling novelist and grandmother

'This book gives you an invaluable starting point into the maze of your childcare needs.'
Dr Penelope Leach, author of the bestselling Your Baby and Child.

'Choosing Childcare is well written, produced and designed and accessible, and will be so helpful to so many parents.'
Charlie Rice, The Fatherhood Institute

'Choosing Childcare is a comprehensive guide, packed with information in an accessible, easy-to-read format.'
Gill Rapley, co-author of Baby-led Weaning and Baby-led Parenting

Writing the book has led to articles and interviews for a range of publications and organisations (such as The Guardian, Working Mums and London Baby), on topics such as grandparent childcare, daycare for children with special educational needs, holiday childcare, Shared Parental Leave and returning to work. If you need expert comment on any aspect of childcare, please get in touch.
