Books on the Second Anglo-Afghan War 1878-1880
Excellent and deeply researched narrative of the campaign, well written and highly informative.
A respected work on the three British encounters in Afghanistan, well illustrated, a great overview.
Wider in scope than Heathcote with greater use of photographs, encompasses the frontier up to WWII.
A recognised classic on the first two wars from this well-known correspondent who was at Ali Musjid. Colourfully written overview.
Lord Roberts' own account of his life with much detail on the Second Afghan War. A long-surviving favourite.
Brief overview of campaigning with Roberts, nicely written personal account of the time.
Wonderful collection of high quality photos which includes a section on the Afghan War.
These two volumes provide a good basic account of the regiments and officers involved in the Afghan expedition. The historical division provides regimental histories and officers while the biographical concentrates on fallen officers and V.C winners.
Films on DVD
Brilliant adventure film based on Kipling's short story, directed by John Huston, sees two adventurers off to make their fortune in Kafiristan in the years after the Afghan War.
M. M. Kaye's classic novel adapted to screen includes much north-west frontier adventure including the Kabul massacre of September 1879, with John Gielgud as Cavagnari.
The defence of Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War brought to screen with some liberties, but then that's par for the course with a dramatic retelling. Great film, recognised classic.
Zulu Dawn tells the story of Isandhlwana (Zulu War) with a marvellous display of campaign detail and a sense of history.
Fiction related to the Afghan Wars
The first Sherlock Holmes adventure sees Dr. Watson returning from service in Afghanistan where he was wounded at Maiwand. Wonderful mystery.
The second book concerning the army exploits of Simon Fonthill sees him travel from the Zulu war to the Afghan war, and special operations round Kabul.
Collection of Rudyard Kipling short stories that includes the tale of Peachy and Daniel's attempt to become kings of Kafiristan.
M. M. Kaye's popular novel featuring Ash, officer of the Guides, and includes some of his adventures in Afghanistan, particularly the Kabul massacre.
Collection of Kipling's war-related fiction and poetry including much inspired by India and the Afghan War, such as That Day, The Drums of the Fore and Aft, Ford o' Kabul River and others.
Much loved 'British Empire' author, who saw action in the Crimea, turns his pen to the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Written in 1888.
